   Agreed, but I didnt think gdm was broken ;) I just want to drop to a    
   console and cant.

   I performed the command (telinit 2) in a virtual terminal under Gnome    
   (gnome-terminal) The screen scrolled madly for pages with nothing but the    
   prompt repeating itself. The CPU fan kicked on and CPU went to 100%.    
   Eventually X was killed and I was stuck at a blank screen. NIC card's    
   light was still on (wireless) and the HD stopped doing its thing. I had    
   to reboot as CTL+ALT + F1 - F6 yielded no results.   
      
   I cant check the runlevel command ATM as I am not home. Will check    
   tonight and report back.
