   Hi all,

   >> If you do this, though, the graphical interface is still loaded and
   >> running, just not visible.
   yep... :-)

   >> I haven't played with Ubuntu enough to know the answer. In a redhat
   >> environment, you would switch the default runlevel to 3, which does not
   >> load x-windows.
In Ubuntu you have to edit the runlevels because 2,3 and 5 are all the
same. But, e.g. if you remove the file "/etc/rc3.d/S??gdm" and edit your
grub menu.lst file to something like

   - --snip
   kernel [...] root=/dev/hda4 3 [...]
   - --snap

your pc should start at runlevel 3. Now you should only have the
consoles ALT+F{1,2,3,4,5,6}. If you want to start X type "$ startx". Be
shure that all the init scripts in "/etc/rc2.d" have to be in
"/etc/rc3.d" as well! (copy them if not there). Otherwise it could be
that apache gets started in runlevel 2 but not in 3...

   cheers,
   Daniel

P.S.: try to edit the menu.lst in the

   # kopt= [...]root=/dev/hda4 3 [...]

line, otherwise the next kernel update will bring you back to normal...
