   There shouldn't be a firewall running.

   First thing to check is encryption. Does the router have WEP or WPA?

   If this isn't the problem...

   I had a similar problem with my mini-pci WiFi.
   In my case... I needed to remove IPv6

   Open a terminal window....
   $ sudo gedit

   replace
   alias net-pf-10 ipv6

   with the following four lines (the off gives a clue to what it's doing)

   alias net-pf-10 ipv6 off
   alias net-pf-10 off
   alias ipv6 off
   #alias net-pf-10 ipv6

   Reboot...

   Check it's worked by typing
   $ ip a | grep inet6

   You may also wish to blacklist it (a good idea if it gets you a connection)
   sudo echo "blacklist ipv6" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

   The above inserts the blacklist line into the relevent blacklist file. This
   may give you a brief warning on boot up. That's nothing to worry about.
