I managed to get the dual boot working using my preloaded version
of Vista home basic by doing this. (This is if you only have one
big Vista partition and no extended partitions and have the means
to restore your original installation if necessary)

Back up whatever's important, have the recovery disk available
   Log on as administrator

Click the start menu and scroll up to "computer"

right click "computer" and select "manage"

   Under manage select 'disk management'

Find the Vista partition/volume and right click
   it and select 'shrink volume'

After shrinking the Vista volume as much as is needed
find the newly unallocated space in the disk management
window and right click it, and create a simple volume
with it. I quick formatted mine with fat32, as Vista
could not do it as ext3 system, and assigned it a new
   drive letter.

In Ubuntu install, don't select to erase /format the
entire disk or manual install. Let Ubuntu resize and
format the UNUSED volume/partition free space.
Complete the install, remove the disk, restart

Reboot, press esc to bring up the boot menu
when you are prompted to do so.

When you reboot, Vista won't be in the boot menu.
Let Ubuntu start, go to the terminal and type
   gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Add these three lines at the bottom of that file:

   title Windows Vista
   root (hd0,0)
   chainloader +1

   and save the file.

Again reboot, press esc to bring up the boot menu
when you are prompted to do so, Vista will be there
   this time.
