I was finally able to create another partition from within vista
by right clicking "computer", clicking the menu option "manage"
then going into the disk manager, right clicking the Vista partition
and shrinking it, then right clicking the unallocated space that
was created and changing that to a simple volume. It couldn't make
an ext3 partition though, just ntfs or fat32.

I then let Ubuntu installation resize and install into the new
   partition volume.

   HOWEVER,

I don't know if it worked properly because the grub menu doesn't
list Vista and I have to edit the grub menu (which needs root
priviledges) before I can try it.

I'm not going to recommend doing this because I don't know if
   it even worked properly yet.
