Been trying for days to get the nvidia drivers up and running.I've tried
everything I can find in the way of howtos, to no avail.

On my latest attempt, I uninstalled everything nvidia I could find on my
system, bar the ubuntu nv driver, then ran nvidia's own installer. During
installation I get msgs to the effect 1) no precompiled kernel interface
was found to match your kernel. The installer then (apparently)compiles
the required interface itself, issuing the msg 2)building a kernel module.

Installation finished with the following msgs 3) unable to create
   /lib/modules/2.6.17.11-386/volatile/nvidia.ko ; 4)unable to restore file
   /lib/modules/2.6.17-11-386/volatile/nvidia.ko

At the end, the installer says installation was completed successfully,
alters xorg.conf to include nvidia rather than nv as the driver and
   reboots.

Ubuntu is obviously running - but the monitor switches off. I've tried
synaptic, envy and automatix, and finished with exactly the same result.

At my wits' end with it now. Can anybody suggest a way forward?
