   No help, just a point of reference:   
      
   The same happens in Dapper (to me). It is something I have been trying   
   to figure out as well. Out of curiosity, what happens if you try to   
   switch to a console using CTL + ALT + [F2-F6]? F1 is the console that   
   usually reports on stdout from the X session running on F7 (use the   
   above combo with F7 to return to X)   
      
   The combo does not work for me. I have not figured out a way to kill the   
   GUI and still have a useable system under Ubuntu.
