I've googled this, but can't find a solution.

Using Edgy with Gnome. I want to stop the X server to install the nvidia
drivers. If I do ctrl-alt-backspace I am presented with a black screen
and a flashing cursor - no login prompt. And no keyboard input is
accepted. The same if I do sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop.

Am I making a basic error in terminology, or is something wrong with my
installation? And how else do I stop X and get into a terminal through
which I can install the nvidia drivers?

   Help appreciated as always.
