I generally take a very simplistic approach to backup on Linux...

Keep notes on which apps you have installed... tar (with compression)
all home directories and other data directories to a USB drive, make a
copy of all of your config files to the same drive.

On a home system with just one or two home directories, used primarily for
surfing, you can probably do all your backups to a USB key drive (1 or 2
   GB).

For a bigger server system, a USB hard drive.

For larger, corporate servers, I would stick with a good tape backup
   system.
