   1) there really isn't any reason to do a 'full image' backup. What you   
   want to backup is the data, not all the unused space.   
      
   2) partimage will do what you request - it also will compress the image so   
   it takes less space. I've just been through an exercise on my laptop -   
   replaced a 40gb drive with a 120gb drive. I used partimage to backup all   
   partitions to an external USB and saved partition data using sfdisk.   
   swapped drives, used sfdisk data to partitin new drive, restored using   
   partimage from a Live CD.   
      
   3) suggest you look at 'sbackup' - simple backup.
