   Wine has some known issues.  ALSA seems to give it fits, as well as a   
   problem with my Radeon display driver.   
      
   I deleted the sound config file and switched to OSS, and updated the   
   Radeon driver to the version from ATI instead of the standard one in Edgy,   
   as per the results of my searches in various support forums, and voila, it   
   works perfectly!
