   You need to use fdisk, parted for fixing the slice size and then a resize tool    
   for the filesystem you are using. There are of course some graphical tools,    
   for different Operating Systems, but not all these can understand all

   As long as you use the same start point for the resized slice, then you should    
   be able to save the old data of the original slice that started at that    
   position. If you use ext2/3, then read the man page for resize2fs:   
   man resize2fs

   As long as you can unmount it, yes, but as ubuntu don't have a normal root    
   account, you will be logged in as a user and that user has it's ~/ in /home    
   which will prevent you from unmouting it, better to do this from the LiveCD.   
      
      
   Remember to backup the most important data you have on your /home, this way    
   you won't loose that if you did ruin the slices.
