I run Ubuntu with an XFCE front-end succesfully on one of my PC's.
Basically I have my main PC running XP on a 300Gb SATA drive, the
second SATA port has a 300Gb data drive, and I plugged an old 30Gb IDE
drive into the IDE1 slot. Ran the Ubuntu setup from the disk, and
   installed on the 30Gb drive.

Now when I boot up GRUB gives me a menu with the option of booting from
either Ububtu or Windows. Works like a treat!
