As far as I am concerned an operating system's job is to run programs
not to decide what programs it is willing to run and to deliberately
make software and hardware obsolete. If you really want to screw up a
windows installation select 'yes' when it says it has a problem and asks
you if you want it to fix it.

In my case the installation disk could not even recover an installation
without loosing all your data when, if the disk is booted with a DOS
disk, all the files and file structure are still clearly intact.

What I do know is that I had a hell of a job trying to persuade Windows
98 to recognise my TV card - it took about a day and I only managed it
by renaming the driver file with lower case letters rather than with the
upper case on the installation disk!

Windows XP refuses point blank to install it presumably because the
manufactures have not rewritten their driver to suit microsoft. I have
found a website with a very long list of instructions and downloads
   showing that it is possible.

My first experience with Linux was a Knoppix live disk. I didn't have to
do a thing to get onto the web. Just clicked the web browser and there I
was. The next thing IT is telling ME I have a TV card and would I like
to configure it? Yes it was on the list. Yes it did configure it.

The problem with windoz apart from it being flaky is it is partronising.
The whole thinking is that you don't need to know anything because it is
so bloody clever it will do it all for you - except that it doesn't and
when it gets screwed up you are stuffed because the stuff you really
need to know is the stuff windoz deems that you don't need to know.
There must be thousands of people up and down the country making a
living sorting out peoples computers thanks to Microsoft. I have
re-installed windows for the 6th time in 3 months the last just over a
week ago. It has already gone flaky. Today I was looking for a file
using the search engine and every time I try it stops responding.

I do not yet have a Linux installation but I am prepared to make the
effort if it gets me out of the ethically dubious clutches of
   microshaft.
