Well, I have to say my experience as a small-systems builder and
network designer and installer differs greatly from yours.

I have yet to find a Windows installation where I don't have to
subsequently run the motherboard drivers disk, for a start. Then the
wireless card drivers disk, then my bluetooth drivers disk... it's
endless. And Windows XP doesn't always pick up my SATA controller if
it's either something like an ALi chipset, in fact the earlier releases
of XP had no SATA drivers whatsoever.

Your experience must be very limnited... my first Ubuntu install, some
3 months ago, picked-up everything bar my printers straight away,
including my wireless card. And installing my Laserjet 5Si and my
network Konica-Minolta colour laser took about 10 minutes.

Windows, in all it's flavours over the years, has had a major problem
with drivers... looking at Vista, especially Vista-64 it seems that
things have got worse. Vista 64 won't let you install any 3rd-party
drivers which have not been signed-off by Micro$oft.

By all means go back to Windows, I still have to run a couiple of
Windows boxes on my network because a few essential apps won't run in
Linux, even using WINE, but for everyday workstation use Linux is far
better than Windows. It's quicker, it loads and runs much faster on
lower-spec machines than it's Micro$oft equivelent, and all apps are
   free!
