It seems that I'm able to take one step, get an error, figure out how
to fix it (often with help from this group), then move to the next
step, and face yet another error.

   With the help of
   https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper, I was
able to get as far as (finally!) finding the correct driver and
loading it into ndiswrapper. I got the all-hallowed "driver present,
hardware present" in response to ndiswrapper -l.

   So far, excellent.

So I did a sudo depmod -a, and got no response. Good, I suppose.

   Then I did a sudo modprobe ndiswrapper. Uh-oh. I got a "FATAL:
   NDISWRAPPER module not found".

I need to get that resolved so I can move on to the next error, which
I presume will be in the network configuration.

I also did an iwconfig. It's not finding the wireless card.

   Thanks.
