Steve Bramham was all like, you know, and then said something like a ...

Please do. Plus, now that you've more fully explained matters in your
previous post, I tend to agree with SINNER's thinking re: overheating.
May wish to go into your BIOS and disable any "Halt on" scenario, if
   so enabled, to assist troubleshooting.

Do need to ask tho' is that machine, the others as well, setup on
64bit kernels or no? Is the computer in question have RAM sticks well
seated and dust free? CPU and video card seat sinks dust free - especially
between the grooves of the sink?

BTW, this machine is an Abit AN8 with an AMD Sepron 3000+ (or maybe
3200), running 2.6.17-10-generic and 1 GB RAM with no problems... no "Halt
on" are enabled, and I use pressurized "air" can spray every month (or at
most 45 days) on all surfaces and even into the power supply. On that
item, check all power connections, etc., especially if the machine has
   been moved *any*.
