I have a similar issue with a desktop with an nvidia agp card.

No amount of debugging has ever solved it.

After the first "over heat" shutdown, I turn it back on after a 20
second power off and all is well for ever and a day until I manually
   shut it down.

It works fine with windows and I can only assume it is a Nvidia thing
since it never happened with the previous ATI card I hard to dump
because of lack of HW OGL.

If you find a solution I would love to hear.
