   Please don't let a grumpy old man spoil the fun that Linux can be.   
   I don't have a printer  but remember of years gone by it is one of the    
   hardest things to get right in Linux.   
   Yes HP is the easiest but maybe it's the least hard...   
      
   Yet CUPS has over the years developed nicely and should be able to get    
   your printer working.   
   As said I don't have a printer so I can't be of more help than to    
   encourage you to find a solution.   
      
   It is worth while registering at the original Kubuntu forum    
   (http://kubuntuforums.net/forums), as they are moderated trolls are    
   quickly removed and the general experience might be more pleasant.   
      
   As to your sound problem, usually Ubuntu picks up the right settings and    
   software during install.   
   You say Alsa is not present, go into Adept and select alsa-base and    
   alsa-utils, I think libasound2 should install as a dependency but check.
