   1) you should not have to do 'heavy duty command line stuff' unless you   
   want to. Nearly everything has a gui tool.   
      
   2) try 'ubuntu for non-geeks' and 'hacking ubuntu'. The latter talks quite   
   a bit about setting up multimedia capabilities.
