   Hmmmm...sounds a little like Ubuntu with the restricted formats installed.   
      
   This is very easy to do from within Unbuntu.

   I'd try that option if I were you Mike. Especially considering you have the   
   official ubuntu book.   
      
   You may find the MMC version is different to the standard install and will   
   make the book a little more difficult to follow at best, and bad advice at
