   Kubuntu is not the best ubuntu for a beginner like yourself. Also, if   
   your pc is real old you maybe better off with xubuntu. Try sudo apt-get   
   install xubuntu_desktop , boot in to an xfce-session and see if you

   according to this post alsaconf was removed after warty because of a   
   bug.
