I have Ubuntu running on my main desktop dual booting XP on a second HD.

I can also use vmware workstation to run the same XP installation as a
   guest OS from within Linux.

I have now purchased a new laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed and I want to
   do something similar with it.

The problem is that I don't have two physical hard disks, which is a
prerequisite for building the setup I describe above because you have to
give vmware direct access to the hard drive for it to work. Obviously, you
cant give it direct access to the same drive that your host os is on or
   you will bork it completely.

So, my question is, are there any emulation/virtualisation apps out there
that will allow me to do the same thing, only with a logical partition
   instead of a physical drive?

Alternatively, if that is not possible which virtualisation product has
the best 3D support, either available now or at least on its roadmap. If I
could get 3D support within a virtual machine I wouldn't need to dual-boot
   at all.
