   Telnet connections aren't made, because telnet is obsolete for most   
   purposes, and a telnet server isn't installed. Before you try to   
   connect to a server, first check whether it is running in the first   
   place. Might save you a headache or two.

   apt-get install openssh-server   
      
   that should install a SSH server. SSH is the "modern version" of   
   telnet.

   IIRC (I'm not a Gnome user) you can start a "desktop sharing" program,   
   which should be a VNC server. You can then connect with any VNC client   
   from your client computer.
