I have an Ubuntu server with GNOME GUI/X11 installed.

I would like to be able to connect from a MS Win XP system running a client
to the Ubuntu system perhaps running the GUI...not strictly telnet with
   25x80 char terminal emulator.

Since even telnet connections are not being made, I need to know how
firewalls are controlled/checked or set. The desktop has no interface to
configuring servers, so I can do it through a shell (bash), but I need to
know what commands to enter, files to check.

The titles/names to necessary/relevant man pages would be nice, then I
could find out how to configure this.

I can live with using telnet with 25x80 term emulator, but something like
Remote Administrator is nice, which runs only on Windows and runs a server
mode app on the one host and a client mode host on the other, and draws a
   nice desktop.

One more thing: I need to configure any server deamons to listen to port
numbers higher than 10000, since the organization's firewall pretty much
blocks any port service headers below that arbitrary boundary (and I have
no idea why...1024 would seem smarter to me).
