   I have no real evidence, but I suspect that Microsoft designed Win2K to   
   placate some of their big corporate customers, who were about to jump ship.   
    In those days, PC hardware was just getting powerful enough to run Unix   
   (and derivatives) well, and some IT managers were starting to think that   
   it would be worth the effort to switch to a system that was designed from   
   the beginning to be secure and reliable. M$ later regretted building a   
   system that would Just Work for years.
