I saw this in another newsgroup:

I participate in several groups and have a few hobbies. I have worked
in the computer field since 1983. I don't tend to see the
proliferation of self righteous know-it-all in any of my hobby
related, or home diy related, or car fixit related areas as I do in
any of the computer related areas I partake in. Sure, there will be
some light ball busting, but not the "you're an idiot for not reading"
or "how could you be so stupid" comments you get in computer groups,
   or workplace for that matter.

I have always thought that the guys (and it is always men) that act
this way are the ones that, due to their nerdiness, were picked on a
lot in school and are horribly insecure about anything else in life.
Now they have an area where they can finally look down on the the
"cool kids" and abuse it. Of course, Linux users would be the extreme
example of people like this. I came to this field a little later in
life and in my first job was the recipient of exactly this kind of
abuse from a couple of managers. They would enjoy laughing at my
questions, very demeaning. I have never forgotten that and go out of
my way to never make a new guy (or gal) feel that way. But to this
day, I still see it around me in the workplace.

I am afraid there is an element of truth in there, and you confirm it.
