   Right and leafnode is your NNTP so slrn should connect to 127.0.0.1 if   
   leafnode is running.

   add to ~/.bashrc   
      
   export NNTPSERVER=SERVER.NAME.HERE   
      
   and add the server name to your hosts file with 127.0.0.1 as the IP
