OOps, tks 4 remining me of the fstab !

Should the entry there be the same as in /etc/mtab ?

In my case, I have discovered that both my [ext3] HDs are already
   covered by the entries:

   /dev/sdb1 /media/D 160 ext3 rw 0 0
   /dev/sdc1 /media/D 320 ext3 rw 0 0

   and the folders already exist.

Is it better to call it 'default' instead of 'rw' in the fstab & does
that create a conflict with the mtab ?
