Recently, runnerup popped out over the fence
   around alt.os.linux.ubuntu and said...
   |Hi all
   |
   |Yes, I am a noobie too and an oldie. Worked with MS since day 1.
   |Tried Linux a few years ago - gave up due to insufficient time.
   |Have successfully installed Dapper with services all running OK.
   |
   |One thing puzzles me though:
   |How do I keep my (internal) HDs mounted ?
   |Everytime I boot this PC I have to go to the Disk Manager and point to the
   |mount point for each disk and then click on "enable" before I can see my
   |files.
   |
   |How do I have to set up the system so that Dapper will auto-mount my
   |hardware when I boot ?
   |
   |Your help is much appreciated, as I am sure its out there somewhere.

If your hard disks are ex-windows, with very high probability they have
   NTFS as file system.
NTFS support on Debian-based distros is, er, buggy, and is read-only.
That's why NTFS disks are usually not automounted by the Linux file
   system.
If you need to access the disk(s) contents, you can follow the
suggestion you got from suckmysav to let the file system automount the
drives, Google a bit to find help, there's a lot out there, and more
detailed that I can be here.
The situation is a bit different if you are dual-booting, and you want
to keep using the disks under Windows AND Linux together.
My suggestion is to install a new disk to install Ubuntu upon, with the
usual Linux partitions (the root "/" and the swap) AND a (large) FAT32
partition on it, on top of your Windows disk(s), and move all the user
data (I.e. each user "My Documents" folder) from the old Win disk to the
new hybrid EXT3 - FAT32 disk in the FAT32 partition, where you will be
able to read and write from both operating systems without a glitch.
To move the Windows "My Documents" folder, right-click on it, choose
"Properties", click "Move..." and create a new directory with your
username on the new FAT32 partition of the new disk. Windows will take
care to move all your data along with the directory, you don't have to
do anything else. If you have more than one user on your Windows
installation, you have to login into all of them and repeat this.
If you need anymore help, we're here.
   Welcome in the new world.
