That's nice, but hiding pgp clear signing is not part of the GNKSA
protocol for newsreaders http://www.xs4all.nl/~js/gnksa/ The Good

Examples of strong supporters of PGP/GPG who also actively newsgroup
post/participate in alt.security.pgp are Tom McCune and David E. Ross -
who each have pgp website pages...

http://www.mccune.cc/PGP.htm Tom McCune's page for Pretty Good Privacy
http://www.rossde.com/PGP/ Pretty Good Privacy - Free PGP installation,
setup, and training in southern California

.... and Tom McCune and David E. Ross do not post clearsigned messages to
   regular or non-pgp groups.

Tom McCune routinely clearsigns his messages in alt.security.pgp, but
not other groups, and David E. Ross doesn't even clearsign his
alt.security.pgp postings. Both of them show a link to their pgp pages,
where access to their public key can be found.

My point isn't about whether or not your slrn or some other newsreader
can display the message without it being 'junked up' with clear signing
baggage, my point is about the fact that the clear signing is totally
pointless if the other readers of this newsgroup aren't using the
poster's public key. And that almost 100% of the readers of this group
would not be expected to be holding the OP's key. Nor would that be the
case in countless other newsgroups which aren't pgp-oriented.

Since no one is holding and using a poster's public key in non-pgp
newsgroups, it is mostly not appropriate to be using the clear signing.

I understand the 'philosophy' about how the usage may possibly help some
pgp 'cause' when/if the signing should actually become necessary, but I
don't think that philosophy is sufficiently important to cause the great
amount of unnecessary pgp 'noise' which unnecessary pgp clear signing
   creates.

Limit the noise to unnecessary clear signing in pgp groups and maybe a
few other places. Limit the pgp promotion to giving a key id in the
sig, and make that sig be properly sig delimited. The normal part of
the sig is not delimited with dash dash space.

The fact that there is RFC information about how clear signing should be
handled doesn't mean that it should be done for every news message
posted. If Tbird's or the OP's configuration options are limited to
either on or off, then I think it should be off and not on.
