   heh. I had a similar disastrous situation with the lamentable nvidia   
   driver situation.   
      
   Had to switch to vesa via xorg.conf, then ran Milone's "envy" script   
   which took care of downloading necessary sources and nvidia packages in   
   order to compile & install latest driver with the 2.6.17-11 kernel. envy   
   takes are of shutting down gdm too for the installation.
