I thought it was only M$ that could kill a OS by doing updates ;)

Situation, system did the latest Kernel patches and now won't boot past
the splash screen. I have verified the boot.lst file and the fstab to
make sure the file system is pointing to the drive (HDA). Both of which
are doing so correctly (confirmed with the backed up files).

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to progress from here? At the
moment the boot sequence fails at splash screen and dumps me into the
InitRAMFS system. Tried to boot from old grub but that failed as well.
When it boots from safe mode it seems to hang trying to find the root
   file system.

   Ubuntu 6.10.

   Thanks.
