   Got it sorted. I uninstalled xfce  and then have re-installed it.   
   Apparently the original installation was either incomplete or had been   
   corrupted. Running an xfce session now and everything appears to be   
   working without problems. FWIW, I did a upgrade of the system after re-   
   installing the xfce desktop environment. Perhaps I should have done that   
   with the orginal. Anyhow, it's sorted out.
