Should look at your xfce4 autostart apps, be certain Nautilus is always
run using --nodesktop while using xfce4 as Nautilus will try to load the
desktop as well as xfce4. Look for a bad user selected option - like turn
off Gnome support, etc. There's a config issue likely wrong on your
   desktop.

Incompatibility? Dunno as I use xfce4 exclusively with 2.6.17-10-generic.
Although there was a problem the last day or so with kernels which I fixed
using "aptitude dist-upgrade" BEFORE rebooting - this is a handy CLI app
   to see what's up, etc.

Here's a clip of the errors:

   ---begin---

   Building tag database... Done
   The following packages are BROKEN:
     linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic
     linux-restricted-modules-2.6.17-11-generic
The following packages will be upgraded:
     linux-restricted-modules-generic
3 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 7753kB of archives. After unpacking 20.9MB will be used. The
   following packages have unmet dependencies:
     linux-headers-generic: Depends: linux-headers-2.6.17-11-generic which is
     a virtual package. linux-image-generic: Depends:
linux-image-2.6.17-11-generic which is a virtual package.
     linux-restricted-modules-2.6.17-11-generic: Depends:
linux-image-2.6.17-11-generic which is a virtual package.
   Resolving dependencies...
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

   Remove the following packages:
   linux-headers-generic

Keep the following packages at their current version: linux-image-generic
   [2.6.17.10 (edgy, now)] linux-restricted-modules-2.6.17-11-generic [Not
   Installed] linux-restricted-modules-generic [2.6.17.10 (edgy, now)]

Leave the following dependencies unresolved: xubuntu-desktop recommends
   linux-headers-generic Score is -592

   Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?]
   -----end---

To remove, I know of no simplier way, start Synaptic, go to history,
search for xfce4, copy and paste the list and start doing "complete
remove" ... get some coffee .

   HTH
