I was running 6.10 with the Gnome desktop. My external usb sound card was
   detected and played fine.

Then I decided to try the KDE desktop - just tinkering, really. In KDE I
can not only get no sound at all but I can't get any mixers or sound tweak
utilities to load - just get the hourglass. And if I try to alter the
   settings/sound applet it just freezes.

   aplay -l gives:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PSC805 [Philips PSC805], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
     Subdevices: 0/1
     Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: default [VOIP USB Phone ], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
     Subdevices: 1/1
     Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
   card 3: V8237 [VIA 8237], device 0: VIA 8237 [VIA 8237]
     Subdevices: 4/4
     Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
     Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
     Subdevice #2: subdevice #2
     Subdevice #3: subdevice #3
   card 3: V8237 [VIA 8237], device 1: VIA 8237 [VIA 8237]
     Subdevices: 1/1
     Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Device 0 - the Phillips - is what should be working, and does (still)
   under Gnome.

Any ideas on how to proceed, bearing in mind that I've already tried
   reinstalling alsa, alsamixer etc?

   TIA for any help...
