Personally, for my tastes, I believe the cursor should be positioned at
the top, because that is very close to where the trimming should begin.
I believe that positioning the cursor at the bottom tends to lead some
posters to untrimmed bottom posting, which is also very bad.

My newsreader provides me with the option to position the cursor at the
top or the bottom and I choose to position it at the top where I start
trimming. Other newsreaders facilitate highlighting for the
   citation/quote.

I'm still arguing that the cursor position isn't the problem.

   > So the fault lies with? Poorly written software? Could it be?

I have used googlegroups and posted a properly attributed and trimmed
and contextualized message just fine. The problem lies with the
   behavior of the poster.

In the case of native OE, it has historically been configured/designed
to favor corporate type email replies with textover fullquote under. If
the poster uses the autosig, then not only is the cursor at the top, but
there is a sig right under it, 'forcing' the autosigged poster to type
in between creating a top post. That is all about corporate TOFU.

That whole business is a set of reasons why the OE user would be better
off with OE QuoteFix, and also why the GGer should read the helpfile to
understand how to use GG to cite and trim.
