   I should have said - ./configure for the app in question halts because it   
   looks for KDE libs - or, at least, for unspecified parts of KDE. That's   
   why I wanted to try KDE

   Thanks for this - will give it a go. Can you clarify what daemons might   
   need turning on to get sound up and running? And how to do it?
