No disrespect, but you've just used a sledge hammer to drive in a thumb
tack - you can install KDE apps without putting the all of KDE in. Try
this; use GNOME and run the KDE Skype app in question to see how it goes.

Doubt it - KDE needs to know things abut the system; there's daemons to
   turn on, etc.

   > Is there a valid reason for using apt-get in a terminal instead?

Yes. CLI is good to get used to. It's good to know how to use these
various commands in case you find yourself without X, there's more
information immediately on screen - example:
   ----begin----
   sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

   The following packages are BROKEN:
     linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic
     linux-restricted-modules-2.6.17-11-generic
The following packages will be upgraded:
     linux-restricted-modules-generic
3 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 7753kB of archives. After unpacking 20.9MB will be used. The
   following packages have unmet dependencies:
     linux-headers-generic: Depends: linux-headers-2.6.17-11-generic which is
     a virtual package. linux-image-generic: Depends:
linux-image-2.6.17-11-generic which is a virtual package.
     linux-restricted-modules-2.6.17-11-generic: Depends:
linux-image-2.6.17-11-generic which is a virtual package.
   Resolving dependencies...
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

   Remove the following packages:
   linux-headers-generic

Keep the following packages at their current version: linux-image-generic
   [2.6.17.10 (edgy, now)] linux-restricted-modules-2.6.17-11-generic [Not
   Installed] linux-restricted-modules-generic [2.6.17.10 (edgy, now)]

Leave the following dependencies unresolved: xubuntu-desktop recommends
   linux-headers-generic Score is -592

   Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?]
