I've used the Gnome desktop since starting with Ubuntu 6.10. Recently I
tried to switch to KDE in order to use a Skype phone driver and GUI which
seems to be written only for the KDE desktop.

I installed KDE through Synaptic. Once running, though, I was unable to
access any sound control programs - alsamixer, kmix etc.No sound would
play either - using an external USB soundcard which works a treat in the
Gnome desktop. My wireless keyboard wasn't recognised on boot either; I
had to use the kde keyboard applet to reset it every time.

I'm wondering - is this a result of using Synaptic to install kde? Is
there a valid reason for using apt-get in a terminal instead?
