Recently, elaich popped out over the fence
   around alt.os.linux.ubuntu and said...
   |First, let me mention that I've had this problem with several Linux Live
   |CDs.
   |
   |I downloaded Edgy, and burnt the iso in Windows using IsoBurn. Unbuntu
   |was very slow to boot up, or to do anything after booting. I clicked on
   |the Install icon, and 45 minutes later, had gotten to step 2 of 6. The CD
   |deck showed constant activity, but nothing was happening. I finally went
   |to bed, with the step two dialog box about halfway filled in, hoping that
   |it would be finished by morning.
   |
   |When I got up, all activity had ceased. The dialog box was at the same
   |point as the night before, and the system was frozen.
   |
   |I had the same problem with Live Cds containing Mepis & PCLinuxOS.
   |However, Debian and Mandriva ran just fine from CD, as does Puppy Linux.
   |All were burned on the same deck using IsoBurn.
   |
   |I'm wondering if some Linux distros do not recognize and install my CD
   |deck properly. In these cases, the deck appears to be running at less
   |than 1X. Using various Windows software designed to ferret out hardware,
   |it either comes back as a TSST or Samsung. Windows itself reports it as a
   |TSSTcorp CDW/DVD TS-H492A.
   |
   |The computer is a Compaq with an AMD processor, 2.0 gHZ, and 256 M of
   |memory.
   |
   |
Use the default (or "safe") BIOS settings.
