You have got a GUI, just have got no Desktop (you do'nt need another one, do
   you?).

First of all, you should fire up the Synaptic GUI installer.

I have first loaded al the Xfce apps that just make life more easy and
enables to customize easily the taskbar.
I have installed Mousepad and the Thunar fiel manager.
Then the apps I wanted finally to use (a newsreader, other Webbrowsers...)

I did everything without one single command line.

If you are not cosy with Xfce and Synaptic you could possibly play a bit
with Xubuntu live CD. You have everything installed from scratch and it
feels better at the first glance, but of course you cant use ift from XP.

   Enjoy.
