Ahh, I have not used them, hadn't the need yet.

   I agree.

You lose me here, possibly because I haven't read the ref'd howto's but I
don't see stopping GDM as being something you would want to leave a newb
   with.

   File a bug report ;)

So you just grabbed the precompiled binary and did not need to install
   kernel modules?

When I used Mandr* X could be up, by default it is on F7, whereas F1
displayed stdout from that X session. F2 through F6 were always
available and brought up a pure console with a login prompt. Going back
to F7 brought the X session back. It was a nice feature and also made it
easy to have multiple Xsessions running.

I have not been able to accomplish this feat although all the config
items seem to be in place and the consoles are available:

   [06:17 PM][J:0][sinner@~]$ top | grep getty
   root 5088 0.0 0.0 1564 492 tty1 Ss+ Feb05 0:00 /sbin/getty
   38400 tty1
   root 5089 0.0 0.0 1560 492 tty2 Ss+ Feb05 0:00 /sbin/getty
   38400 tty2
   root 5090 0.0 0.0 1564 492 tty3 Ss+ Feb05 0:00 /sbin/getty
   38400 tty3
   root 5091 0.0 0.0 1560 492 tty4 Ss+ Feb05 0:00 /sbin/getty
   38400 tty4
   root 5092 0.0 0.0 1560 492 tty5 Ss+ Feb05 0:00 /sbin/getty
   38400 tty5
   root 5093 0.0 0.0 1560 492 tty6 Ss+ Feb05 0:00 /sbin/getty
   38400 tty6
   sinner 507 0.0 0.1 2016 756 pts/1 S+ 18:17 0:00 \_grep
   getty

I use htop so top is aliased

   [06:17 PM][J:0][sinner@~]$ alias | grep top
   alias top='ps afuwx'

Hmmm, I'll need to check the archives, but I think you got me by a
   couple, pop ;)
