   While I agree with the sentiments you lay down here.  I am referring to    
   the official how-to on installing the restricted packages.  Now if we    
   are talking newbie friendly, they should either mention the Automatix    
   method or at least tell people how to stop GDM.  If you followed the    
   howto as a noob, you will see at some point you would become unstuck as    
   there are gaps in the howto.  As for the Nvidia drivers, no compiling is    
   needed.  Pressing CTRL+ALT and F would not work as X hasn't    
   actually shut down.   
      
   I agree Automatix is the best solution, but be honest, you have to    
   either know about it or come across it as a solution because it isnt    
   installed by default.
