   Neil; I am no guru with Linux but I have had a few things like having    
   made wrong size partitions.   
   You can change the size of your home parition but to do this you would    
   have to rob some space out of the partition just after your home    
   partition. It looks to me like a real project not something for a newbee.   
   I think In your situation, I would reinstall. For me, when I install any    
   Linux versions, I just make the swap partition and a single root ( / )    
   parition and let the install put the home usr opt etc as subdirectories    
   inside the root partition.   
   Here is a copy of my partition table. I have 10 different Linux versions    
   installed just to try them out.

   So you see I don't make these other partitions and yet all these Linux    
   versions I have all work by just selecting which one I boot into.
