   I had similar results installing on an old PIII 550 Intel i810 board    
   w/768 of pc100.   
   Not exactly sure which change got it to work. I messed with a bunch...    
   so to list a few:   
   I had the box loaded up with cards... NIC, AverTV, SBlive, USB, etc.    
   Pulled all the cards. (I think the Aver card was hanging it)   
      
   Poked around the bios. Disabled auto irq and anything else 'auto' I felt    
   safe turning off.   
      
   A bunch of command line switches during the install... noacpi, noapic,    
   nowhateverelse I found in the docs.   
      
   Finally got it to install...   
   Sorry, advanced crs and poor documenting prohibits me from being more    
   specific.
