The variable is set in .bash_profile and should be set during login (also
   set in .bashrc).

     echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH

at the shell prompt confirms the value for the variable that was set.

I neglected to mention that I have been in contact with the developer, and
after 5-6 cycles of email to try to sort this out, he is at a loss for
what to do. He's checked several files created during the configure/make
processing, and he can't figure out why the library files are not found.

I have posted this problem in the comp.os.linux.development.apps group as
suggested by responder 'Hadron'. At the moment I am preparing outputs
requested by another responder in that group: listings (ls -alF) of the
directories in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH search, ldd outputs for the tests to
show their library dependencies, and the values of the relevant
environmental variables. I am also trying to clear up what may be library
conflicts too: for example, I had built/installed Qt4 but the package
depends on Qt3, and Qt4 is not backwards-compatible.

I will post to this thread in this and the other group when I have
   prepared the outputs.
