My brothers got a serious virus on his windows pc. It kept persisting after
a couple of reformats/installs of windows. Anyways, I thought it would be
easy to set him up with ubuntu cause besides the porn sites (where he
probably got the viruses from in the first place) he mostly uses myspace and
aim. We've since setup a squidbox with dansguardian on it to filter the
content but now I need to set his pc up.

So, now I'm getting a problem when I try to install on his pc

When I try booting up I get this error. (from either the live cd or booting
   from HD)

   Starting System Kernel...

Failed to start the X server (your graphical
interface). It is likely that it is not set
up correctly. Would you like to view the X
server output to diagnose the problem?

   X Window System Version 7.0.0
   Release Date: 21 December 2005
   X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.0
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.15.7 i686
Current Operating System: Linux Jons-Computer 2.6.15-26-386 #1 PREEMPT
   Thu Aug 3 02:52:00 UTC 2006 i686
   Build Date: 16 March 2006
    Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.
   Module Loader present
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implimented (??) unknown.
   (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Sat Jan 20 06:05:43 2007
   (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

Then clicking okay results in another message

Would you like to view the detailed X server output as well?

Then when I do, the output looks exactly the same as above. clicking okay
   displays another message:

The X server is now disabled. Restart GDM
   when it is configured correctly.

Note, the border around all these windows is a bunch of strange characters
rather then a solid black line or whatever it probably should be. ie. the
letters are mostly Uoe with ticks or sideways colons etc.

So, after the error goes away, I'm just left at a command prompt
   Linux ubuntu 2.6.15-26-386 #1 PREEMPT Thu Aug 3 02:52:00 UTC 2006 i686
   GNU/Linux

The programs included with the Ubuntu system are free software; the exact
distribution terms for each program etc. etc.
Ubuntu comes with no warranty, etc..

To run a command as administrator etc.
   ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

Or, when booting from the HD:
   Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS Jons-Computer TTY1
   Jons-Computer login:_

Note, I have ubuntu installed on another pc so I hooked up his hd to that pc
and performed the install from there and swapped it back in.

Any ideas how to get the GI to work? For what its worth, the system is a
   dell dimension 2400.
   I believe it has a 2.4ghz celeron 80gb hd and 512 ram
