   I have been running Kubuntu for several years and have never seen this    
   problem.   
   Having read the other postings I'm sure it has little to do with the    
   fonts used but more with the default code in use.   
   Are you able to make new documents with these symbols, in other words    
   does the problem only show itself when opening existing (Windows) documents?   
      
   UTF-8 should give you a good display of diacritics.   
   Generally you are best of with ISO 8859-1 Western.   
      
   I assume you're Dutch, do you have the Dutch language supported?
