In what case? My first experience with slrn was on Mandrake and I
   compiled it myself.

   > so

So? Until I got to Ubuntu, I was compiling slrn and leafnode among many
other apps just for the experience, BTW, I was once an average user as
   were we all.

And Windows is different how? The average user NEVER installs windows.
That said Linux distros have come a long way in the install department
and IME installs much easier ON COMPATIBLE hardware than windows ever
   has.

   > And that average user is
   > going to use Thunderbird or KMail or another point-and-click-program, not
   > pine or slrn or some other CLI mail-program.

No, the average NEW user is going to ask:

   Whats the Best....

Just search any *nix based group for the above phrase.

Which starts a religious argument along with a listing of what people use
and why and will make a decision based on that. Pan, slrn, et all IME are
not installed by default and so they will need to ask unless they are
running KDE and stumble onto knode, and if they want extended binary use
they will soon realize how poor a newsreader choice they made and back
   to:

   What is the Best...

Ubuntu has ~20,000 apps in the repositories, its a rare occurrence that
one would not find a prepacked application and once found installation
is easier than it is on windows.
